Fri, Feb 27: Students continued working on the “Sickle Cell: Am I a Carrier?” lab.

Thurs, Feb 26: Mrs. Annee reviewed the sushi results and showed the video clip, “Blood Brothers” and students began the “Sickle Cell: Am I a Carrier?” lab.

Wed, Feb 25: Mrs. Annee discussed the pedigree practice problems and distributed a second set of pedigree practice problems.  Mrs. Annee announced that a 32 points quiz (pedigrees & X-linked inheritance) will take place on Tues, Mar 3.

Tues, Feb 24: Mrs. Annee discussed pedigrees and students began analyzing the sushi DNA sequences.

Mon, Feb 23: Mrs. Annee discussed the X-linked practice problems. Students completed and submitted the “Using Genetic Crosses to Analyze a Stickleback Trait” activity.

Feb 16-20: Genetics

Fri, Feb 20: Mrs. Annee discussed X-linked traits. Students completed the Chi Square analysis of the “Using Genetic Crosses to Analyze a Stickleback Trait” activity and worked on X-linked practice problems.

Thurs, Feb 19: Students completed Part II of the “Using Genetic Crosses to Analyze a Stickleback Trait” activity.

Wed, Feb 18: Students completed Part I of the “Using Genetic Crosses to Analyze a Stickleback Trait” activity.

Tues, Feb 17: Students completed the “Murder by HIV?” assignment.

Mon, Feb 16: No school.

Thurs, Feb 12 & Fri, Feb 13: Students watched the film, Do You Really Want to Know?

Wed, Feb 11: Students prepped fish samples to be sent to California for sequencing and then worked on the “Murder by HIV?” case study.

Tues, Feb 10: Students ran gels to determine whether or not they had PCR product from the fish samples.  While gels were running, students completed the pre-video reflection for “Do You Really Want to Know?”

Mon, Feb 9: Students completed and submitted Part II of the “Using Bioinformatics to Study Evolutionary Relationships.”

Feb 2-6: DNA Barcoding

Fri, Feb 6: Students prepared samples for electrophoresis and sequencing.  They also completed Part I of the DNA Barcoding assignment, “Using Bioinformatics to Study Evolutionary Relationships.”

Thurs, Feb 5: Students in periods 2, 6, and 8 prepared samples for PCR.  Students in period 4 did not have class.

Wed, Feb 4: Students in all class periods extracted DNA from the fish samples.  Students in period 4 also prepared samples for PCR.

Tues, Feb 3: Mrs. Annee discussed this year and last year’s “Biotech Sushi Adventure” and students prepared the fish samples for extraction.

Mon, Feb 2: Students in periods 2, 4, and 6 began the DNA Bardcoding assignment, “Using Bioinformatics to Study Evolutionary Relationships.”  Period 8 did not have class due to the senior class Mass.
