Nov 30-Dec 4: DNA Sequencing

Wed, Dec 2 – Fri, Dec 4:  Mrs. Annee is attending HHMI’s Holiday Lecture Series.   Students will watch Last Flight of Bomber 31 on Wednesday and Friday, whereas they’ll watch The Family that Walks on All Fours on Thursday.  Students need to post an online reflection about one of the two movies by Thursday, Dec 10 at 11:59pm.

Tues, Dec 1:  Mrs. Annee returned the Anatomy and Evolution of the Genome & Analysis of a Genome Segment quizzes.  She then discussed the format of the Mutations quiz that will take place on Wed, Dec 9 (postponed from its original date of Wed, Dec 2).  Students read an autoradiograph.

Mon, Nov 30: Students completed the Sanger DNA Sequencing activity.

Nov 16-20: Mutations

Fri, Nov 20: Mrs. Annee announced two future quizzes (Tues, Nov 24: Anatomy and Evolution of the Genome & Genome Segment labs; Wed, Dec 2: Mutations) and discussed the format of Tuesday’s quiz.  Students continued analysis of the Mutant Hemoglobin Gene lab.

Thurs, Nov 19:  Mrs. Annee returned the Restriction Mapping quizzes, while students submitted Mutation!: Revelations of Restriction Enzyme Cut Sites.  Students analyzed the Mutant Hemoglobin Gene gels.

Wed, Nov 18: Students took the Restriction Mapping quiz and finished Mutation!: Revelations of Restriction Enzyme Cut Sites in class or for homework (depended upon how much time a student had in class after submitting the quiz).

Tues, Nov 17:  Mrs. Annee discussed the Analysis of a Mutant Hemoglobin Gene lab and then students began the Internet Assignment called Mutation!: Revelations of Restriction Enzyme Cut Sites.

Mon, Nov 16: Students did some restriction enzyme mapping practice problems to prepare for Wednesday’s quiz, Mrs. Annee discussed the quiz format and the Analysis of a Mutant Hemoglobin Gene lab.  Students also loaded their Mutant Hemoglobin samples in gels and ran them.

Nov 9-13: Restriction Enzymes & GATTACA

Wed, Nov 11 – Fri, Nov 13:  Mrs. Annee is attending the National Association of Biology Teachers conference in Denver, CO.  Students will watch GATTACA and post on online reflection about the movie by Friday, Nov 20.

Tues, Nov 10: Students completed the analysis of the Genome Segment lab.

Mon, Nov 9: Students prepared samples for the Mutant Hemoglobin Gene lab and began analyzing samples for the Genome Segment lab.

Nov 2-6: Restriction Enzymes

Fri, Nov 6:  Students in periods 2, 4, and 6 completed analysis and submitted their Anatomy & Evolution of a Genome lab.  Students in period 8 continued analysis of the same lab.

Thurs, Nov 5: Mrs. Annee went over the answers to the second set of restriction mapping practice problems and then distibuted a third set of practice problems to students.  She announced the quiz over restriction mapping will take place on Wed, Nov 18.

Wed, Nov 4:  Students learned how to make restriction maps and began analysis of the Anatomy & Evolution of the Genome lab.

Tues, Nov 3: Students loaded gels for the Analysis of a Genome Segment lab.  Students in periods 2 and 6 collected data for the Anatomy & Evolution of the Genome lab while students in period 8 began analyzing the data.

Mon, Nov 2:  Students prepared samples for the Analysis of a Genome Segment lab and Mrs. Annee gave a pre-lab lecture over the Anatomy & Evolution of the Genome lab.  Students in periods 4 and 8 collected data for the Anatomy & Evolution of the Genome lab by measuring migration distance of various bands of DNA.
